The short comparison

  • Plantation shutters: permanent, cordless, very durable, wipe clean, higher cost up front
  • Blinds: lower cost, easy to change later, more slat and finish choices, cordless or corded
  • Both: control light and privacy by tilting, and both can be made to measure

When plantation shutters are the better choice

Shutters are built like furniture and fixed to the window frame. There is nothing to fray, and very little to break. They suit rooms with hard daily use, strong sun and windows you want to look built in, including French doors, sliders, arches and street-facing windows.

They are also a popular choice when a home is being prepared for sale, because they stay with the house.

When blinds are the better choice

Blinds cost less, which matters on a whole-house project. They are easier to change later if your style changes, and they come in a wide range of finishes. Faux wood blinds handle humidity well, so they suit kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms. Real wood blinds are lighter and suit wide windows in air-conditioned rooms.

Using both in one house

Many homeowners use plantation shutters on the main living areas and street-facing windows, and faux wood blinds or shades on secondary windows and bedrooms. It keeps the look consistent where people see it, and it keeps the budget in check.

Safety and care

Shutters have no cords at all. Blinds are available cordless, which is the safer choice for homes with children and pets. Shutters wipe clean with a damp cloth or a duster. Faux wood blinds wipe clean too.

Common questions

Which lasts longer, shutters or blinds?

Shutters are built like furniture and have no fabric, cords or slats to bend, so they generally last longer. The exact lifespan depends on the material and how the room is used.

Do shutters block more light than blinds?

Not necessarily. Larger louvers let in more light and view than most people expect, and tilting them up bounces daylight off the ceiling. For a fully dark room we recommend blackout shades.

Can I mix shutters and blinds?

Yes, and many homes do. We will recommend by room and by window.
